About D/V

This blog highlights travels of M/V DESERT VENTURE and her crew – Capt and Angie.

DESERT VENTURE (D/V) is a custom-built, all aluminum motor vessel.  She is 54′ loa, 16’9″ beam, and has a 5′ draft. D/V has twin 5.9 Cummins 300 hp turbo charged diesel engines on V-drives. She has a 20 kw generator and a  robust inverter system.  We travel at an average speed of 7.8 knots. Regardless of where we are – at the dock, at anchor, or underway – we enjoy quality of life aboard.

The crew consists of one extremely qualified Captain and his First mate. Captain has over 4 decades of professional and leisure boating experience. First Mate has twelve years of living aboard and cruising experience. You learn a lot in that time. Every day is a new experience when living and traveling on the water.

We cruise the west coast of  North America – from SE Alaska to Mexico. We traveled up and down the west coast in four round trips, going as far north as Juneau, Alaska, and as far south as Isla Barra de Navidad, MX.

We cruised full-time for more than nine years, though we lived aboard and traveled for almost thirteen years.

My blog describes our lifestyle, and gives people a view of the world and way we live aboard. We hope our lifestyle and experiences will teach, encourage, and equip people to do the same.  We are baby boomers living our dream.   We hope that our experiences will encourage others to seek their dreams.  We loved our time aboard.  We can’t count the beautiful places we saw, the wonderful people we met, friends we made, and all the memories we made along the way.

Please enjoy our blog  – “Cruising Log for MV DESERT VENTURE” and her crew, Captain Bruce and Angie.

  1. I have purchased a 30 foot sailboat to cruise the San Juans and live aboard for 5 months of the year. Truly part-time compared to your experiences. I cannot thank Capt Bruce enough for his generous and persistent help fixing my dining table. What a job! Sitting at it last night for dinner was a complete joy!
The tour of your beautiful, immaculate Desert Venture was awesome. One glorious surprise after another! I think the built-in vacuuming system was one of the most impressive features! I can see the love and attention this crew has put into D/V. No time or expense have been spared and it shows! High recommendations go out for the beautiful, equally neat and clean engine room, equipped with the most complete workshop and tool complement ever to be seen on a cruising yacht! The Captain is truly a remarkable craftsman. Thank goodness for me he delights in sharing his expertise with others!
Having the capacity to create your own water from the de-salinization system is really impressive and must have played a huge role in your independence and long distance explorations along the coast of Western US, Mexico and Canada! Doing your own laundry with the Bosch washer and dryer is a homemaker’s dream come true. Using water you “made!”
My envy of your king size bed will never cease as I cuddle close to my sweetie in the sailboat’s V-berth. I love the head technology and shower stalls! Everything is truly first-rate on this unique cruiser. I cannot believe the right person will not come along and gratefully purchase Desert Venture soon… perhaps during the Boat and Home show on September 21st! The very best of luck to both of you when she sells, as I know it is your intention to be land-lubbers. Nonetheless, your love of this water craft shall cause heart-break when she moves on to the care of new owners. May Desert Venture inspire the same level of care from her new caretakers as you have lavished upon her!

Aloha from Sarah Lynn Joy, Kealakekua, Hawaii

  2. Angie,

ML and I really enjoy your blogs. It takes us back to happier times.

We are so glad we were able to meet you and Bruce at Cabrillo in San Diego and only regret not having more time. We still have pictures of you on our “California Deck” drinking Champagne and eating peanuts. What fun!

    Charley.

    • Dear Charlie and Mary Lou! It was our joy to meet you sweet people, too. You gave “aft deck cocktail hour” a whole new meaning! I think I finally recovered. 🙂
